Ammonia Free Hair Colour Dyes

Ammonia Free Hair Colour Dyes- Until the early 1900s, hair colouring was made from a wide range of herbal and natural dyes.

Flying in the face of other chemists who found the development of hair coloring trivial and unworthy of their time, French chemist Eugene Schuller created the first safe commercial hair coloring in 1909. His invention was based on a new chemical, paraphenylenediamine.

The two main chemical ingredients involved in any colouring process that lasts longer than 12 shampoos are:
· Ammonia - This alkaline allows for lightening by acting as a catalyst when the permanent hair color comes together with the peroxide. Like all alkalines, ammonia tends to separate the cuticle and allow the hair color to penetrate the cortex of the hair.

· Hydrogen peroxide (also known as the developer or oxidizing agent) - This ingredient, in varying forms and strengths, helps initiate the color-forming process and creates longer lasting color. The larger the volume of the developer, the greater the amount of sulfur is removed from the hair. Loss of sulfur causes hair to harden and lose weight. This is why, for the majority of hair coloring, the developer is maintained at 30% volume or less.

Cancer?
The debate has long raged over which dye ingredients pose a health risk. If you want a dramatic change or permanent coverage, avoiding all questionable ingredients is difficult. One of those questionable ingredients is p-phenylenediamine (PPD), found in many permanent dyes.

Mary Beth Janssen, a beauty consultant in Palatine, and author of Naturally Healthy Hair, says PPD is the cause of most allergic reactions to dyes and that it has been linked to cancer.

Are there any dyes that do not contain PPD or Ammonia?
Most big brands produce dyes containing PPD and Ammonia, some include reduced levels. However there are now some manufacturers who have produced products with no Ammonia or PPD in their products at all.

Smart Beauty UK Ltd are one of the very few that have managed to irradicate these ingredients in most of their product ranges. We believe in producing the very best salon quality in affordable, easy to use home colouring kits; ”creative hair colouring… made easy”. From bright highlights and all-over colour to sexy blondes, Smart Beauty offer it all on one easy-to-use site: www.smartbeauty.eu

Animal Testing and Ethical Policy
Most big brands remain to test on animals for all of their products. Smart Beauty’s message is clear: They do NOT test on animals and believe it is no longer necessary for cosmetic companies to test products in this way.
§ They use high-performance, innovative formulations with carefully selected natural ingredients that take care of the folicles (organic certified ingredients and other natural sources including vitamins E&C).
§ They use environmentally friendly packaging, which is all 100% recyclable, including non-PVC mixing trays and sustainable sourced cardboard packaging.
§ All components are sourced in Europe in order to reduce our carbon footprint for environmental conservation.
§ Additionally, they support various charities and are now THE ONLY Hair Colouring Brand to be certified by The BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) and listed in The Little Book of Cruelty Free.

This is a book produced to help like minded consumers find companies such as Smart Beauty which offer products that have not been tested on animals throughout the manufacturing process. They work very closely with the BUAV to support this cause. To find out more information and apply for The Little Book of Cruelty Free 2009 please visit: http://www.gocrueltyfree.org/
