PPD Free Hair Colour
PPD Free Hair Colour, What Is PPD- ParaPhenyleneDiamine
p- phenylenediamine /p- phen·yl·ene·di·amine/
(fen?il-en-di´ah-men) a derivative of benzene used as a dye for
hair, garments, and other textiles, as a photographic developing agent,
and in a variety of other processes; it is a strong allergen, causing
contact dermatitis and bronchial asthma.
Paraphenylediamine (PPD) in hair colour is the main colour giving chemical
in most of (98%) of the Chemical hair dyes including most of the big brands.
Paraphenylenediamine
– Current Research
Paraphenylenediamine as mentioned above, is certainly not a new substance
or one that was only recently detected as an allergen, but the current
literature provides evidence that its importance as a contact sensitizer
is increasing considerably.
A rising rate of paraphenylenediamine patch test frequency and a continuously high proportion of positive reactions are now being found in studies. Researchers discuss the use of permanent hair dyes as a likely explanation; hair dyes were previously found to be common sensitizers in Denmark.
Paraphenylenediamine was also identified as the relevant allergen in a permanent eyelash dye. Not surprisingly, paraphenylenediamine was found to be the leading contact allergen in hairdressers with hand dermatitis, and in a prospective study the application of PPD-containing hair dyes was shown to result in an unacceptably high percentage of sensitization in users as well. These observations may be of practical relevance for future usage limitations.
'Finally, it is really alarming that even children can suffer from allergic reactions to hair dyes severe enough to require hospitalization and that immediate hypersensitivity to paraphenylenediamine can occur.
How
damaging is PPD to my health?
In most cases, reaction caused by the use of hair dye in usually only
involves dermatitis to the upper eyelids or the rims of the ears. In more
severe cases, there may be marked reddening and swelling of the scalp
and the face. The eyelids may completely close and the allergic contact
dermatitis reaction may become widespread.
Cancer?
The debate has long raged over which hair dye ingredients pose a health
risk. If you want a dramatic color change or permanent coverage, avoiding
all questionable ingredients is difficult. One of those questionable ingredients
is p-phenylenediamine (PPD), found in many permanent hair colors. Mary
Beth Janssen, a beauty consultant in Palatine, and author of Naturally
Healthy Hair, says PPD is the cause of most allergic reactions to hair
dye and that it has been linked to cancer.
